WHATS GOING ON THIS MONTH?

Core Fitness Taster Session - Run by a fully qualified fitness instructor - Weds 22nd May 2013 at 7pm (Bookings now closed)

Have you ever felt exhausted by a riding session? Do you want to improve your stability and stamina? Then come along to our Core Fitness Taster session!! It will be a fun and friendly session aimed at improving your core strength and stablility.

The session will be run by a fully qualified and insured instructor from:
https://www.facebook.com/pages/Equipeak/354986127941878?ref=hl

Riding uses particular muscles and movement patterns different from other sport. Like other sport, involvement in riding alone is not enough to get you fit for riding. Creating balance and flexibility, muscle memory, body awareness, core strength and cardio-vascular endurance (stamina for long show days/ long rides) is more effective when you can work on these areas out of the saddle between your rides. Working off horse allows you to take your muscles through their full range of motion, reducing the occurrance of knots and risk of strain injury, while improving your ability to absorb your horse's motion.

Unmounted Exercises can:
Improve balance and physical stamina
Assist the development of a more balanced posture
Decrease the risk of back, muscle and joint strain and fatigue
Enable more effective and precise aids in the saddle
Give you more energy, self-confidence and focus
Increase your flexibility

Cost: £12.50 (Riding Club Members), £15.50 (non Riding Club Members)
The cost includes a Swiss ball and exercise sheet which you can take away to use at home.
Please make sure that you are wearing comfortable clothing, suitable for this type of exercise usual gym wear) and trainers. It is recommended that you bring a bottle of water with you to keep you hydrated.

Group size limited to 5. Groups divided into adults and children, and experience. Don't miss this opportunity to work with Bill to develop both you and your horses knoweldge and skills, and all importantly have fun.
Bill Levett is a well known face on the eventing circuit, having competed in the UK for more than 15 years. The only son of retired school teachers he was put in the saddle at an early age. Although neither of his parents rode, his father had a passion for horses and Bill, along with his four sisters, was encouraged to try his hand at riding.
A local station owner had seen his potential in the saddle, and asked Bill to come and help him break the station horses. After a year he moved on to work for Neale Lavis – Neale, in his day, was on the Australian eventing team, winning Olympic individual silver and team gold as well as finishing third at Badminton.
When Bill arrived at Neale’s there was a big drought in Australia, so he spent the first six months working with cattle as a drover – although he really went to help him as a strapper with his racehorses.
Then it was on to Agricultural College in Victoria to do a two year Stud Management course. A couple of jobs followed and one day Bill found himself watching the Eventing at the Los Angeles Olympics on the television. Although at the time not in a position to do anything about it, he decided that he wanted to ‘have a go’.
Returning to Neale’s yard he worked his way up to become stud manager, looking after two or three stallions and around 150 mares, and finally had the opportunity to event. None of Neale’s children were interested in competing, so Neale focused on Bill, lending him his saddle, his shirts, boots, trailer – everything, as well as training him.
Neale also gave Bill the horse that he eventually came to England with, Mirabooka NJ (the NJ at the end of all Bill and Jenny’s own horses’ names is in recognition of Neale and everything he did for Bill – NJ is his nick name).
In 1988 Bill won a Range Rover Scholarship to go to Gatcombe Park and train with Mark Phillips and took a year off from Neale’s yard. Returning to Australia it was several years before he was back in the UK, selected with Mirabooka NJ for The Hague WEG squad.

HOOF - Take Back the Reins Course 2 - We are now running a new course designed by British Equestrian Federation. Specifically aimed at adults who want to get back in the saddle. Your Instructor, Nikki will help you gain your confidence in the Saddle, as you rediscover the fun that can be had on horseback.

Friday evenings, 6.30 - 7.30pm, a 7 week course starting Friday 14th June. Only £125 for the whole 7 week course.

It’s never too late to rekindle or discover a love of horses, pick up that journey and enjoy riding...

Fitting horses back into your life can be simple. Just half an hour of riding a week can boost your sense of wellbeing and help to keep you feeling healthy. Returning to riding may feel daunting but with the right horse to give you confidence it’s amazing how quickly you’ll get going again.

...So, what is it? It’s a series of riding lessons providing individual and group coaching, specifically designed to support your first steps in order to get you into the saddle. It will help you develop your skills so that you can ride out, depending upon your skill and confidence levels, perhaps in the open countryside, improve your fitness, and progress within the sport, making sure you have fun along the way.

Riding is a hobby for people of all ages and abilities so there’s no need to use the excuse “I’m too old!” or “I’m not good enough”.

Ruth, 43: TBTR Participant - “Returning to riding was something I fancied doing anyway, but Take Back the Reins really gave me the incentive to do so. I just wanted to ride to enjoy it - not to become an expert".

I'm a bit nervous and don't feel confident.... There will be qualified instructors available to guide you, and you can rest assured you’ll be matched with a horse to suit your ability.

I feel unfit! Riding is a gentle way of getting exercise, fresh air and having fun. It will strengthen your core body muscles and tone your bum, tum, legs and arms. A relaxing cardiovascular workout!

What happens if I haven’t got the kit? The riding schools will be happy to lend you a hat and suitable boots until you decide you want to commit and buy your own, that’s all the equipment you’ll need to start off with.

I feel guilty about taking time out from the family....Riding is a great sport that the whole family can enjoy and is a healthy way of spending time together.

But it’s too expensive! If you’ve signed up to a local gym and have hardly hit the treadmill, it’s time to put that money to much better use by taking a weekly lesson or hack. Cost £125 for the complete course of 7 sessions

BHS Riding & Road Safety Training & Exam (9-5pm) Training Sun 23rd June & Exam Sun 7th July

This is an essential exam for anyone who is planning to ride on the road . Taken by more than 4,000 candidates a year, the BHS Riding and Road Safety Test helps educate riders in road safety in order to minimise the risk involved when riding on the roads. The test is available to all riders from 12 years of age and is supported by the Department for Transport. It is probably the only test that any rider will undertake that has the potential to save not only their own life but that of their horse and other road users as well. It is not essential to own a horse in order to take the test, as horse hire is available.

Candidates do not have to be BHS members. Candidates applying to take the test must book a place with the BHS at least 28 days in advance of the test date.

There are three parts to the test:

The Theory Test - This is usually a written test with questions covering the Highway Code, the Riding and Roadcraft Manual, and the rules of riding on the roads.

The Simulated Road Route - This part takes place in off road conditions. It is designed to test the rider’s ability to ride appropriately on the road. This includes observations, signalling, manoeuvring and negotiating a series of hazards that they may encounter on the roads.

The Road Route - Once the candidate has demonstrated an understanding of road safety in the first two sections they can attempt a set route on the roads to demonstrate their competence in dealing with vehicles and other hazards.

Please Note: You need to book directy with the BHS as well as Tumpy Green in order to secure your place.

Please note you will need to complete a training session and the test to pass the certificate.

Costs: Training Day £50, Test between £37 – £50 payable directly to BHS. Horse hire available seperately.
